What’s Wrong With Democracy?

Why do we end up with the leaders we have? Why is trust in politicians at a record low? And what is responsible for the sudden rise of populism across the world? This new podcast, brought to you by Tortoise and the Open Society Foundations, unpacks all of these big questions with a team of academics and experts, but it is all discussed in layman’s terms so it is easy to follow if you’re not a politics expert.

Presented by Professor Ben Ansell from the University of Oxford, the series looks at different ways that democracy is under threat: from autocracy to voter apathy. There’s also an interesting three part mini-series looking at the upcoming US elections and why we at one point ended up with two candidates in their eighties. Essentially, is the model that elects US Presidents not fit for purpose?
