A couple of weeks ago we featured podcasts that are covering the US Election, such as Americast (who are dropping daily episodes between now and the election.) With the election taking place next week, more podcasts are stepping into the fray.
The Rest is History: America in ‘68 has launched a six part series looking at one of the tumultuous years in modern America’s history. From the bloodiest year of the Vietnam war, to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, Lyndon B Johnson deciding not to reseek re-election and the subsequent riots and violence that took place in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention.
The series looks at the parallels between that year in American society and today. It is a subject that co-host Tom Holland is particularly keen on, since his Doctorate is on that very subject. The first two episodes are available to listen to for free, with the four following episodes already available for subscribers.
Elsewhere, historian Simon Schama was on the latest episode Life and Art from the Financial Times to talk about “the unprecedented collapse of truth,” and the consequences of misinformation on the future of our democracy. He also highlights the various ways that the US Election result might not become apparent for weeks. The historian Mary Beard was on The TLS Podcast, which reviews the latest on books and literature from the Times Literary Supplement. And on The Media Club, media reporter Tara Conlan and host Matt Deegan talk about The Washington Post losing more than 250,000 subscribers (that’s 10% of its overall readership) after the paper said that it would no longer endorse any Presidential candidate, and why The Washington Post’s stance might be good news for The Guardian.
