A small, remote island between South America and New Zealand is the focus of this shocking, thought provoking and well-handled true crime series.
The story starts in the late nineties, with Detective Sergeant Peter George, who works in Kent and was asked by his bosses to head to the island, 9,000 miles away, to investigate a rape charge.
Once he arrives on the island a week later (it takes time as you can’t land on the island so you have to arrive by boat), he realises that there’s no decent police officer or proper judicial system, which would ensure law and order. And then it becomes evident that the sexual abuse that had occurred was far from an isolated incident.
The journalist Luke Jones deals with the story with great sensitivity and insight, weaving in the history of the island to place the events all within context. The first three episodes are available to listen to now, with the rest of the series available over the following two weeks.
