TfL Marks 25 Years with New Season of Mind the Gap Podcast

Celebrities, staff and young superfans join Tim Dunn to celebrate London’s transport network, from the Olympics to Oyster cards.

Transport for London has launched a new season of its award-winning podcast Mind the Gap today (18 September), part of celebrations marking 25 years since TfL was created.

Presented once again by railway historian and broadcaster Tim Dunn, the four-part series looks back at how London’s transport system has changed since 2000 — from the introduction of Oyster cards and contactless payments to the Night Tube, the Elizabeth line and the city’s expanding cycling network.

The first episode explores the birth of TfL, with comedian and former employee Babatunde Aléshé recalling his time in the Contact Centre alongside contributions from London Transport Commissioner Andy Lord and TfL archivist Tamara Thornhill.

Later episodes bring in singer Heather Small, whose song Proud became the unofficial anthem of the 2012 Olympics, and Olympic rower Pete Reed, who speaks about accessibility after a spinal stroke. Radio 1 DJ Jaguar highlights the importance of the Night Tube for both nightlife and safety, while Deputy Mayor for Transport Seb Dance discusses London’s “green heartbeat” and ambitions for sustainable travel.

The season also includes voices of children aged 5–16 who won TfL’s “25 Superfan” competition, recorded at the London Transport Museum, sharing what excites them most about buses, Tubes and trains.

Heather Small described her appearance as “great fun” and sent birthday wishes to TfL, while Andy Lord said he was “immensely proud” of the work done over the past 25 years.

Episodes will be released weekly until 9 October on all major podcast platforms, following the strong reception of the previous season, which topped Apple’s Places and Travel chart.
