A new series looking at the devastating consequences of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, a military ban for non-heterosexual people serving in the US Armed Forces. The policy, which was introduced in 1993 and was not lifted until 2011, was introduced because of a belief at the time that they "would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline.”
“Tens of thousands of gay men and lesbians were discharged from the military, and this policy strongly reinforced a culture of homophobia and violence within the ranks,” says host Eric Marcus, also behind Making Gay History, an acclaimed podcast that explored the history of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.
As a focus, the series looks at Randy Taylor, who rose to the rank of Two Star General, but had to suppress his homosexuality through fears it would destroy his life and career.
