A new well-handled and sensitive series revisits a story reporter Lucy Greenwell has remembered since childhood: a baby left abandoned on a country lane in Suffolk in October 1987.
Lucy manages to track down Jess, who was the newborn, and the series delicately investigates why someone would decide to leave a foundling, as well as why these stories capture the public imagination. It taps into the myriad of feelings that come with being a foundling: confusion, anger and resentment.
“I’d imagined a more nuanced story of trauma and loss,” says Greenwell. “But what I've uncovered over the last year is a story which is much more troubling than anything we dreamt up as children.”
The first episode is available to listen to now, with further episodes currently available on Observer+, or subscribers of The Observer newspaper.
