From The Observer, a recent episode of its Slow Newscasts series looks at Jay Fraser, a man born and raised in Dunblane, who ended up fighting the war in Ukraine… for Russia.
Reporter Francisco Garcia speaks to locals who knew him, trying to understand his motives, and also working out how he managed to get there. “Fraser was a young man in his early 20s from an unremarkable middle-class family,” says Francisco. “Though quiet and chronically online, he wasn’t exactly a loner. It felt simultaneously horrifying and faintly ludicrous that this guy could end up there.”
