If you have ever wondered about the history of popular foods, from pineapple on pizza to the (arguably quite awful) blancmange, you’ve come to the right place. This new series, by food historian Dr Annie Gray and broadcaster Emily Briffett, taps into the history of popular foods and why they have become staples of the daily lives of millions.

Speaking of blancmange, did you know that its origins can be traced all the way back to the medieval era (tastes like it). Also, terrifyingly, the majority of the British public find pineapple on pizza acceptable. I think this helps explain some of the things that are currently wrong with this country. A future episode will look at the surprisingly complex history of the Victoria sponge and whether it was actually named after Queen Victoria.

There are two episodes available to listen to now, with early access to future episodes available for History Extra Plus subscribers.
