Easter Roundup… Our Podcasts of the Year (so far)

Plus Artemis II, Bottoms Up and The Book Club

The Harry Hill Show
While nothing will ever surpass Harry Hill’s TV Burp, there’s a lot of familiar and surreal humour in the latest series of his video podcast.

Guests, including Self Esteem, Nish Kumar and (of course) Amanda Lamb are introduced by an AI robot who gets half their biography wrong. Oh, and the set looks awfully familiar too.

13 Minutes Presents: Artemis II - A timely podcast. As Artemis II is currently attempting to navigate the Moon, a new series of the acclaimed podcast features scientist and broadcaster Maggie Aderin-Pocock providing the latest updates on the mission, the research being undertaken, and the risks involved. Expect daily updates.

Self Help - Weaving his personal diary with topics of mental health, in each episode the actor and writer Scottee goes on a ramble without any electronic devices.

There’s observations, wisdom and anecdotes that feel relatable and engaging, providing the perfect balance of heart and humour.

Project BläckfiskA well-crafted sci-fi conspiracy thriller, in which Amber (played by Amy James-Kelly, from Industry and Everyone Else Burns) decides to open a box she receives in the post, addressed to one of her relatives. The podcast is suspenseful and engrossing, with many twists and turns.

Strangely – Fresh from acclaim for their podcast on the Pitcairn Islands, Luke Jones and Poppy Damon’s podcast duo re-examines strange stories you may have heard in the news in recent weeks to work out what is really going on and what it says about us. It offers a rather fascinating observation of the human condition.

Bottoms Up with Alan Carr and Lee PeartYou would think that a podcast backed by a boozer would all feel rather corporate and bland, but this podcast by Alan Carr and Lee Peart is a delight for the friendship between the hosts and their ability to go off script.

How Did We Get Here? Israel and the Palestinians - In this relatively new BBC Radio 4 series, journalist Jonny Dymond looks at the origins of the Middle East conflict alongside a team of experts.

It helps you put the most recent war into context, with insight and analysis you can follow in layman’s terms.

Wanging On with Graham Norton and Maria McErlane - The best part of Graham Norton’s Radio 2 and Virgin Radio show now lives on in podcast form, and is all the better for it.

Simple format really: Norton and Maria McErlane respond to listener dilemmas with no-nonsense and wit.

The Book ClubUsually, podcast spin-offs are not as good as the original series or feel like an afterthought, but this isn’t the case with this new series from Goalhanger.

Bringing together Dominic Sandbrook and Tabitha Syrett from The Rest Is History, each episode looks at a great text to examine its worth.

They start with Wuthering Heights, which feels right following the recent film release.

Real VikingsNoiser is the gold standard of history storytelling podcasts, and its latest, all about the Viking era, continues that tradition.

Expect compelling narration, enchanting soundscapes, and lots and lots of facts. Great for all the family.
