A Missing Pet Miracle or a Tool of the Surveillance State?

A new podcast asking the biggest questions in tech

BBC Studios has launched a new weekly technology podcast, The Interface, exploring how digital platforms, artificial intelligence and infrastructure are reshaping everyday life. Hosted by tech journalists Thomas Germain, Karen Hao and Nicky Woolf, the show is designed to be an accessible guide to the major technology stories of the week, no matter how big or small.

The series debuted last week with an episode about Ring doorbell’s new “lost dog” AI feature, which has already reached number one in Apple’s technology podcast charts. The hosts debate whether it will reunite missing pets with their owners, or be used to build a far more sinister surveillance network.

Following its success, episode two examines whether chatbots can be trusted, the impact of large-scale data centres on local communities, and the implications of Elon Musk’s plans to expand his Starlink satellite network. They ask the big questions – what kind of world is being built, why and who’s in charge, all without losing their sense of humour.

Executive producer, Philip Sellars says, “The Interface brings sharp expertise and genuine curiosity to perhaps the defining story of our time – how technology is changing all of our everyday lives, and our futures, in ways we may not always understand. It’s informed, funny and slightly addictive – in the best way – and perfectly reflects how people feel and talk about technology now.”
