LGBTQ+ History Month is here! š³ļøāšš³ļøāā§ļø
At a time when trans (and queer) peopleās lives are under threat and scrutiny, it feels more necessary than ever to amplify stories from the community and highlight the historical impact of discrimination.
There have been a slew of great podcasts doing just that. The Quilt, a partnership between the Queer Britain museum and production outlet Aunt Nell, features interesting stories on queer history from all across Britain and Northern Ireland. In recent episodes, host Tash Walker has visited the South West to learn about queer maritime history and Adam Zmith went to Glasgow to learn about Glasgowās lesbian disco scene in the 1980s.
On Homo Sapiens, host Christopher Sweeney interviewed Lisa Power MBE, an activist who has campaigned relentlessly for LGBTQ+ equality. She talks about her time volunteering at the LGBT Switchboard and the impact of the homophobic government policy Section 28. Elsewhere, Adventures in Time & Gender is a drama looking at the history of trans people, performed by a trans and non-binary cast.
Queer the Music looks at the formation (and legacy) of some of the most well known songs cherished by the community. Recent episodes looked at āItās A Sinā by the Pet Shop Boys, āThe Power of Loveā by the Pet Shop Boys and āI Do This All The Timeā by Self Esteem.
An older series, but definitely worth a look, is National Trust: Prejudice and Pride, which looks at National Trust properties that have a LGBTQ+ history. Finally, the acclaimed author Armistead Maupin was on Origins with Cush Jumbo, talking about his groundbreaking book series āTales of the City.ā
