Is this Britain’s oldest podcaster?

One of our most culturally influential educators is the subject of a new podcast

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think I’ve found the oldest person with a podcast in the UK today.

George Hall is an acting teacher at the Royal Academy of Music. Now, at the age of 100, he’s launched a five part podcast looking back at his life and career.

George Hall at 100 is “one of the most important, influential and inspirational acting teachers in the history of British theatre,” says the actor Neil Pearson, who introduces the first episode. And what a career he’s had, including time as a cabaret artist, voice coach, theatre director, writer, music hall performer and television music director.

He’s also had long stints at Central School of Speech and Drama, the Guildhall, Yale University and now the Royal Academy of Music. Many of the pupils he has taught went on to win Oscars, BAFTAs, Tonys and Golden Globes.

He’s met (and has stories) on just about everyone, from the late Dame Maggie Smith to Sir Laurence Olivier. Many of his former students make cameos in this series too, from Christopher Eccleston, to Rufus Sewell, Harriet Thorpe and James Nesbitt.

And yes, George is still teaching at the Royal Academy, delivering postgraduate lectures once a week via Zoom. Happy Birthday George, from everyone at Podcast Rex.

Elsewhere on Podcast Rex, Patrick has been enjoying Start Here, a genre exploration podcast from ABRSM, the parent body of the Royal Academy of Music.
