Adolesence: the TV show that’s all over podcasts

Stars and those behind the scenes have swapped the set for the podcast studio

Adolescence, the Netflix four part drama co-written by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, and shot in one continuous take, has been the biggest talking point of the TV year so far.

Erin Doherty, who is spell-binding as child psychologist Bryony in episode three, talked to Simon Mayo on Kermode & Mayo’s Take about what it was like to film. “I made the decision really early on to really push against the 2D nature of playing a psychologist, because I think it's very easy to just be one note.” says Doherty. “I made the decision to have hope and to be battling with that throughout.”

For a deep dive into how the show was made, Doherty, Graham, director Philip Barantini and writer Jack Thorne were guests on The Filmmakers Podcast, talking about the process of writing the script, the challenges and opportunities of filming without a single cut and the current difficulties within the film and television industry.

Meanwhile on The News Agents, the team did an episode exploring why the series has touched such a nerve. “36% of men now believe that feminism has done more harm than good,” says co-host Lewis Goodall. “Young men are far more likely to say that they themselves have suffered as a result of women and positive change with regards to women. Young men say they are discriminated against in favour of women.

“You only have to go back one generational cohort to find that that did not exist. Something quite significant, quite profound has occurred very quickly.”

I also recommend listening to Stephen Graham on Desert Island Discs, which was recorded back in 2019.
