The History Podcast: Invisible Hands

David Dimbleby is one of the most recognisable and distinguished broadcasters in the UK, so any new series that he hosts is always going to pique people’s interest.

In this illuminating new series, he looks at the story of the free markets and how it has shaped the forces that guide our society. It starts with its strange origins, when at the end of the Second World War a chicken farmer called Antony Fisher became exasperated at how the Egg Marketing Board were controlling the price of his eggs, so started the Institute of Economic Affairs, which propelled free market ideology.

“Free market capitalism is the theory that the best way to run our economy is not through government control, but instead by handing power to the free market,” says Dimbleby. ““But we're coming to a time where that idea itself might be in crisis.” All six episodes are available to listen to now on BBC Sounds.
