The BBC has been trying to work out how best to deliver Scottish news for a while. After audiences, and members of Scottish government, pushed for the BBC to make a bespoke Scottish version of the Six O’Clock News (or a ‘Scottish Six’ as it ended up being called) the BBC launched a bespoke Scottish BBC channel, with a full hour’s worth of news at 9pm.
However a news bulletin at 9pm resulted in never really finding a large audience, so the BBC had to go back to the drawing board. So as well as moving the bulletin to 7pm, they’ve introduced a new daily news podcast focusing on Scottish current affairs, with each thirty minute episode looking at one or a couple of topics in depth.
It’s a bit like its sister Newscast, in that it brings a selection of journalists and experts to discuss stories without throwing in opinion, but it is flexible to cover the latest breaking news. Hopefully, it will satisfy those north of the border frustrated at how London centric the news agenda continues to be.
