Crime Next Door: The Golden Toilet Heist

In a nice change from many dark true crime podcasts out there, this surprisingly engrossing new BBC Sounds series unpacks the bizarre heist of an 18-carat solid gold toilet that was stolen from Blenheim Palace back in 2019.

Created by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, the toilet had been installed in the palace as part of an art exhibition and generated even more of a buzz when it was attached to the mains so that it could actually be used. Then, after an event where partygoers poured champagne down the toilet, a masked gang broke into the palace and stole it. The thieves found nicking it a bit of a struggle too, considering the toilet was 100kg, so it was dragged and rolled out of the property.

Clodagh Stenson is an entertaining host, interviewing the palace staff who witnessed the heist or dealt with its aftermath. It also makes you wonder: what do you do when you have stolen a golden toilet?
