The former junior doctor has recently become a BAFTA-nominated screenwriter - and now Adam Kay has a podcast with his long-time friend, Radio 1's Matt Edmondson. The theme? Why, only a list of absolutely everything that might kill you.
It’s called, imaginatively, The List of Absolutely Everything That Might Kill You (listen now), with the pair taking on everything from deadly doorbells to fatal feather boas.
Think of it as a cross between No Such Thing As A Fish and RedHanded. We sat down with Adam to find out why we should tune in...
You must have had plenty of offers to make podcasts since your book came out - why did this idea appeal so much?
A combination of working with my old friend Matt, and saving the life of an entire nation.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned making the first few episodes?
If you’re hit by a bolt of lightning, you’ve got a 90% chance of surviving. Absolutely extraordinary – I assumed that was game-over territory. Turns out you might as well go around parks during thunderstorms holding a TV aerial.
Matt Edmondson appears to be scared of everything… which must make it hard to have a conversation about all this?
I’m not entirely sure how he ever manages to leave the house, to be perfectly honest. Or even stay in the house, when there are so many potential fatalities beyond every corner and bit of cornicing. But his worries certainly flushed out every possible way that a pair of headphones might be deadly, for instance.
What podcasts are you listening to at the moment?
I’m a huge fan of Three Bean Salad – Mike Wozniak, Ben Partridge and Henry Paker dissect a different topic every week through the medium of lukewarm comedic banter.
If you had to recommend one episode as a way into your show, what would it be?
Let’s go old-school and say episode one. We pit lifts against vending machines to find out which is the most dangerous part of the office, and let you know what to do if you find yourself in a lift hurtling down to earth (this involves bundling up a jumper and a certain amount of prayer.)
Adam Kay and Matt Edmondson's The List of Absolutely Everything That Might Kill You is available weekly - the third episode dropped yesterday... Follow the show now to get more!
